There is much to keep us afraid these days. We are keenly aware of the tremors that fill the landscape. Our hearts are becoming as sensitive as any seismometer to the fractures beneath our feet. Culture is breaking apart. Most mornings the needles of our hearts spike as we read the headlines. But we steady ourselves by parroting a nice lie—the danger is far off and we are safe. But then earth-shattering quakes like the tragedy in Charlottesville and today’s attack in Barcelona send us running for shelter. The rafters creak and dust flies and picture frames shatter on the floor. That one was close, we think.
And then fear comes. Not all at once. It’s like a fog that creeps upward out of the foundation’s cracks, created by disaster. The rumors and reality of bad men doing unthinkable things is not only noxious, but addicting. An invisible enemy is in our midst. Our stomachs turn in hearing the details and yet we can’t get enough. Fear has that effect on shaken hearts.
What do we do when life is shaking and it feels like our world is coming off its axis? How do we create a new rhythm of staying unafraid? When terror and fear cripple us, how can we strengthen our legs to walk in faith?
My answer is always: Don’t overestimate evil. Don’t underestimate God.
Evil is real and present, and we are aware of every tear shed by this manifestation of the Evil One. But don’t put too much stock in the power of this toothless foe. He can shake doors and windows, but our foundations are built and secured by the Lord (Psalm 62:1-2). Make this confession with me today and every day–Life is broken, but God redeems even the worst things for his glory. I will not be afraid of what is coming. I will say no to terror and stay unafraid because God orders every step and gives every breath.
Thanks for the reminder that God is still God Jon!!!!!!Blessings
