Where’s Waldo is perhaps the most beloved travel game my kids own. Connor and Sydney have spent hours on the interstates of America looking intently for this overgrown elf. If you’re not familiar with Waldo, the premise is that Waldo hides. Our job is to find him amidst difficult surroundings that only confuse and plant the seeds of a migraine. I hate Waldo.
However, my anger towards Waldo is purely pragmatic. That is, why look for Waldo? What’s the point? Is Waldo going to give me something? Do something to help me? I’m certainly not getting any fashion tips from a man that wears a red and white striped hat all year round. Perhaps I hold personal disdain towards looking for Waldo because this is how many followers of Jesus see their Heavenly Father. God has become someone that is to be found after a long night of searching. To many, God is ducking in between the buildings of heaven—we’re never really gonna get a clear view. And while there are verses in the bible that speak to that kind of idea (read Jeremiah 29-31), the predominant reality is that God is NOT hiding. He is not making it difficult for people to find him or discover their destiny in Him. In fact, what we see more often than not (in the scriptures and in experience) is that God is making it really easy for us to know Him, find Him and discover our destiny in Him.
This coming weekend, we’re beginning a series at Vineyard entitled Game Plan. We’ll be unpacking the truth that God is more interested than you are at helping you discover His will. If you hate Waldo as much as I do, you’ll love this series. See you then!
